From the Activities Team: Winter Weekend Skills Continued
by Richard on February 12, 2010
This weekend saw us running our second winter skills weekend. We spent a cracking two days with lots of snow; too much at times. We also saw some avalanche evidence first hand on Beinn Eighe with lots of blocks lying at the bottom of the coire. This was great for the course as we looked at avalanche avoidance and how to judge the risk surrounded by evidence of avalanches. The rest of day was spent looking at how to move around in snow-covered mountains, ice axe arrest and general safety.
On Sunday we changed location and headed for the Applecross coires. This was an amazing day with views stretching across Torridon and even the odd moment when the sun came out. We spent our day looking at basic rope techniques and emergency shelters while trying to catch as much as sun as possible.
Richard is our all-action man, dedicated to helping our guests and visitors get the most from the Torridon activities programme, whether it is a gentle stroll round the estate and into the hills or full-scale mountaineering.
