June sees the arrival of the Celtman Triathlon to the Torridon area. Athletes from around the world will compete in an epic test of endurance involving a 3.8 kilometre swim in frigid Loch Torridon waters, a 200 kilometre cycle over mountain passes and topped off with a gruelling 42 kilometre run taking them over Beinn Eighe!

With the event taking place on Saturday 23 June, the Torridon Inn will be a busy place with more then 600 people expected to descend on the area, so be sure to book your table ahead of time for dinner. We have evening entertainment from the Lochcarron Session Band and for those musicians amongst you, please bring along an instrument and join in.

As for the Celtman, we shall all be cheering on Torridon’s very own Ryan Maclean as he tests himself against some of the world’s best triathletes. Good luck Ryan!

The first swallows of the season are flying over the Torridon grounds and the cuckoo is sounding off from the woodlands and moorlands. In the garden our fruit tree blossoms are in full bloom and the bumblebees are visiting them to gather pollen and nectar.

We have planted crab apples in a new orchard area. The variety we have chosen is named after Harry Baker, a fruit expert for the Royal Horticultural Society. His book The Fruit Garden Displayed is the perfect guide to growing fruit covering all aspects of the art. The crab apple trees produce large purple red fruits, purple to red flowers and colourful foliage in a glorious tribute to the great man himself.

Green clean…..with a little help from science!

At the Torridon we are always trying to come up with ways in which we can help the environment and reduce our carbon footprint, none more so then our Head Housekeeper Jo. she is always trying to find ways to reduce the impact we have on the environment and our health; from the natural REN products to 100% recycled toilet & tissue paper, to plastic recycling and LED lighting.

Jo had been aware of the Ionator, a new innovation and concept of cleaning which uses only tap water straight out of our wee burn! She set about researching the product and contacting other hotel and industry professionals to get recommendations and feedback. She contacted the suppliers who were happy to let her try one out and the results have been startling!

The Ionator works by changing the tap water into an oxygen rich mixture of positively and negatively charged nano-bubbles. The ‘charged’ water when sprayed onto surfaces breaks down the dirt and kills the germs allowing them to be wiped away. All the staff at The Torridon love using the Ionator and all the rooms at the Torridon are now chemical free and even more sparkly than they were before as there is now no chemical build up on the surfaces and the air is as fresh inside as it is outside.

Slugs, snails, small rodents all come out to feed on the succulent new growth. But dealing with them often involves other natural predators being present in the garden to strike a balance, hopefully in favour of the gardener.

Hover flies appear for the aphids, toads and frogs for the slugs, thrushes and blackbirds for the snails, and our friendly local buzzard population for the voles and shrews.

These are all good companions in the garden to complement the tender loving care applied by the busy gardener. Our Torridon oasis is full of wildlife to offer a helping hand.
