It was with disappointment that we were unable to attend the Hotel Review awards for Scotland last weekend. My father in law was taken into hospital with a heart problem and Rohaise and I were unable to get alternative child care as the grandparents were tasked with the job. David is out of hospital now and will no doubt make a swift recovery……….if he decides to take life a little easier!
Robert and Colleen went in our place and thoroughly enjoyed the event although they did think that there were too many awards which means the evening goes on forever.
It is a different event from that of 2004, when we were fortunate enough to win the inaugural “Hotel of the year”. That year although nominated for 4 categories, we thought we had travelled all that way for nothing and I had decided to order another bottle of wine and take my black tie off and relax! To say we were surprised would be an understatement and the photos that then followed show me obviously enjoying myself. We were extremely proud of our award and also the ones that have followed. In recent years we have won awards for the bar, chef, weddings and Activities (twice). Our recent achievement of Scottish Romantic Hotel of the year is further evidence that what we do here at Torridon is being appreciated by others.
The awards for Rohaise and I, are all about the staff and it is recognition for them that the job they do is rewarded and recognized by the industry. There are those that think Hotel Review Scotland is a biased view on the trade. The review that the hotel receives each year is paid for by membership and it would be hard to argue that they would ever give a bad review when we are paying for it. I would like to think that everyone should receive a good review but that some properties will receive a great review and further recognition for their efforts by receiving awards. Although there are 90 awards that may be won, too many as far as I am concerned as I think the quantity detracts from the quality, it is the hotels of the year category of awards that offer the biggest compliment. Winning this years award has put a smile of the face of all my staff and that is what counts more than anything. We will now be able to market ourselves for 12 months as the most romantic hotel in Scotland and there has got to be good value in that surely.
Thank you to Hotel Review Scotland, thank you to the staff, and thank you to all those guests and members of the public that voted for us on the HRS website.
